| Heidelberg, Germany |
The romantic city of the loving, old student and tourist center, is located on the outskirts of the Odenwald Region, where the Neckar river enters the Rhine valley. Heidelberg university is the oldest in Germany and has at present approx. 30,000 students, who shape the town and life very much in respect to the total number of inhabitants of 130.000. As Heidelberg was not destroyed in WW II, because the US Forces had decided to make it the location of their headquarters, the historical town was preserved - a rarity with cities of this size in Germany. Today Heidelberg still hosts the European US Army Headquarters and a large US community.
Numerous Poets, among them Scheffel, Brentano, Arnim, Goerres,
Hoelderlin, Eichendorff and Jean Paul have praised the picturesque
setting of the city and the castle. They have contributed in making
Heidelberg into the world-famous, romantic town it is today, a town in
which one may "loose one´s heart". The most beautiful
panoramic view of the city is from the "Philosopher´s
Way" opposite the old town. This is also is the favourite spot for
the loving and..... for taking wedding photographs!
Each year 150,000 tourists come to
Heidelberg, with Americans and Japanese in the lead.During winter time,
Heidelberg is quiet and you can sense its unique atmosphere more easily. |
