The Ludwig Danube Main Canal

The Ludwig Danube Main Canal, an artificial waterway from Bamberg to Kelheim, here near the city of Feucht in the vicinity of Nuremberg in Franconia, was finished 1846 after eleven years construction time under Ludwig the first. It connects the Main and the Danube rivers and was a project aiming at increasing the trade from the Russian Czar Empire to the English Empire.

During the construction time around 6000 workers with pimple, spade and shovel simultaneously worked along the canal. The 16 meter wide and with 1,5 meters at that time quite deep canal became strongly damaged in the second world war.  As restoration was considered to be too expensive, this fourth longest waterway in Germany was closed in 1950.

The paths along the Ludwig Danube Main Canal, on which the ships were pulled by horses, today are trails and bike paths with fascinating romantic attraction.
